Currently immersed in illustrating the entire Harry Potter series,

Jim Kay delved into the saga's iconic protective magic for his contribution.

He chose to depict the majestic stag, Harry’s profound Patronus,

a deeply symbolic form echoing his father’s own spiritual guardian.

Creating a miniature artwork provides a delightful departure from my usual large-scale projects, which typically measure A2 or bigger due to my diminishing eyesight. This time, I crafted the piece beneath a magnifying glass, employing pigments originally formulated for model kits. These paints are a joy to work with, offering smooth application and impressive opacity. The background draws inspiration from the intricate designs of William Morris, adding a touch of vintage elegance. Additionally, I took the time to hand-paint the back of the postcard, including custom stamps, a personal touch I often incorporate when sending handwritten letters to friends.

Renowned author and illustrator Steven Lenton, known for his imaginative tales involving daring space heists and adventurous robots, has recently embarked on a new artistic journey—creating a charming mole character.

“I had never illustrated a mole before, so this was a delightful challenge for me to take on as a Patronus,” he shared. “I’ve always thought of Patronuses as majestic and intricate beings, but I love the idea of a small, adorable creature representing hope and protection. It was a bit intimidating at first, but also incredibly enjoyable. I hope our efforts will contribute generously to BookTrust’s wonderful work!”

I've always been fascinated by mythical creatures in my work, so naturally, when asked to create a Patronus, I gravitated toward a dragon.

My interpretation blends Eastern and Western dragon traditions - combining the sinuous form you'd find adorning Chinese pottery with the more heraldic stance of Welsh iconography. Both cultural representations possess their own distinct magical qualities that I wanted to capture.

Dragons have this universal appeal across civilizations - they're powerful, ancient, and undeniably magical. There's something about their enduring presence in our collective imagination that makes them the perfect spiritual guardians.

When designing this particular piece for the charity auction, I wanted to create something that would truly stand against the darkness - and what better creature than one that has symbolized strength and protection throughout human history?

Rob Biddulph, renowned as the official illustrator for both 2019 and 2020's World Book Day, has chosen a cheetah as his Patronus.

He imagines that when he casts "expecto patronum," a swift and majestic cheetah would burst forth from his wand, racing swiftly to ward off dark creatures like Dementors. The cheetah would elegantly circle the area before returning to safety.

However, Biddulph humorously confesses that his true Patronus might actually be a humble woodlouse, though he prefers not to admit this publicly or admit that drawing such a creature wouldn't be as exciting.

I've had the privilege of exploring the enchanted landscapes of North Wales, where the natural world unfolds its magic daily. During my wanderings with Mabel, my faithful canine companion, I've encountered magnificent birds of prey that never fail to captivate my imagination.

The hills here are home to majestic buzzards, elegant red kites, stealthy sparrow hawks, mysterious owls, and graceful kestrels. Each sighting stops me in my tracks, rekindling a lifelong fascination with raptors that began in my childhood years.

When presented with the opportunity to illustrate a phoenix Patronus, I embraced it as a magnificent creative challenge. This mystical firebird represents the perfect fusion of my artistic connection to the Wizarding World—which began in 2014 with my reimagining of Bloomsbury's Harry Potter covers—and my enduring passion for winged predators.
